A broken bulb is not so difficult to replace but all you need is to be careful while doing it as it can prove to be dangerous if not done carefully. Before starting the process, cut off the power of that fixture. Cut the power of the circuit breaker of that bulb and if the bulb is a part of a table lamp then cut all the power supply to this lamp.

Now you need to wear leather gloves in your hands and glasses on your eye. It is must if the bulb has broken on a wall fixture or a ceiling fan. It’s a good practice to wear a hat. Place a trap under the broken fixture that can hold any remaining glass of the broken bulb.

One way is to put the pliers as much as possible into the base that is broken using your hands. Separate out the handles and put some force on the bulb base with the help of pliers and turn it in anti-clockwise direction.

With this force the broken base may come out and you need to be careful that you don’t break the fixture during the process. Also, if this process does not work out, use some other alternative. One more is stated below.

Try to put a screwdriver into the bulb base and socket. You may have to slightly bend in the broken light bulb base using the needle nose pliers so that it can get a good hold.

Using a pair of needle nose pliers grip the broken light bulb base and attempt to rotate it anti-clockwise. Be careful not to break the light fixture when doing so. If there is resistance in turning the broken light bulb base counter-clockwise then turn it in clockwise direction and then again in counter-clockwise direction. Like this you can remove the broken bulb from socket.

Once the elimination process is complete, check carefully if all the broken pieces are removed or not. After that, fix a new bulb inside the socket and switch on the power to check whether it’s operating fine or not. In case the bulb does not lit then remove the bulb and insert it again.

To prevent the bulbs from breaking in the future, never over tighten them while screwing into the light socket. Screw them just till the point where you feel slight resistance and test to see if the light works without flickering. If it does, leave it as it is. If it flickers, then tighten the light bulb just until the point the flickering stops.
